FLAXSEED BENEFITS |
 |
There are many health advantages in these little guys!
So much so that in 1 tabelspoon they pack a wallop of (ALA) Omega-3 fatty
acids, 1.6 grams to be exact and thats what adults should at least get per
day. The Omega-3 in flax reduces the risk of some types of cancers, Breast,
Prostate & Colon. Another beneficial advantage is the amount of Fiber, in
just 1 tabelspoon is 3.5 grams which is 15% of recommended daily intake. |
It also contains high levels of Lignans which reduces the risk of several
types of cancers, heart disease and osteoporosis, and protects against
endometrial cancer, breast cancer & prostate cancer. Research shows that
eating lignan-rich foods after being diagnosed with cancer slows down the
cells from dividing and reproducing (cell proliferation) and speeds up the
rate at which cancer cells die.
So are you an athlete?, or are you just trying to stay in shape, look and
feel great? Bet you didn't know that flax also has the ability to build
you strong healthy cell walls. It assists in building Muscle (increasing
proper tissue growth by better flow of oxygen to body cells), it also
lowers the risk of Cardio Vascular Disease and assists in burning fat. And
it doesnt stop there, flax has the ability to clear your skin and make it
look and feel smooth (its fatty acids control the production of excess
androgens), Great for teens! |

| HEALTH WATCH |
I have read some where that including flax in daily diet is as
important as brushing your teeth, or taking your daily vitamins.
What is Flax?
Flax is made up of so many important health benefits in
a single seed, that I consider it to be one of nature's most
perfect health foods. The list of health benefits that can be
contributed to flax seed is quite impressive. I don't know if
you can find any food that even comes close to it at all. It
gives you all around immune support, promotes healthy cholesterol levels, aids healthy digestion, and promotes healthy glowing skin. Your daily dose of flax seeds gives you everything that's good for
you, including essential fatty acids, protein, vitamins, precious phytonutrients, and health promoting lignans, as well as soluble and insoluble fiber.
Where did it come from?
Flax is one of the oldest cultivated crops in history. It
has been around for thousands of years (it’s even in the Bible).
Our ancestors revered its health benefits and curative powers.
Somewhere along the way its healing powers were forgotten or
overlooked in favor of "modern" therapies. Today these healing
powers are being rediscovered in Canada, Europe, and the Far East.
It's interesting how easily we forget the things we've known for
hundreds of generations. Can it really help you live a longer,
healthier life? In a word, yes!
Health Benefits
Flax is helpful in alleviating more than 60 health conditions.
Some of these are cancer (flaxseed contains at least 27
cancer-preventing compounds), allergies, high blood pressure, acne, eczema, psoriasis, breast pain, immune disorders, vision problems, heart attacks, joint problems, high cholesterol, multiple sclerosis,
arthritis, A.D.D. and depression. Eating flaxseed will even help you prevent dandruff and dry, cracking winter skin.
Facts
- Flax contains lignans which are a rich source of antioxidants.
- Flax is one of the richest sources of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids available.Omega-3 is pivotal to the health of your body and brain.
- You would need to eat 100 slices of whole wheat bread to get the same amount of nutrients found in just two tablespoons of flaxseed.
- Flax seed also contains soluble and insoluble fiber, both of which are important in promoting normal cholesterol levels.
- Just one quarter of a cup of flaxseed is packed with 10 grams of fiber.
- Fiber acts as a broom, cleaning out your intestines; it can help to promote regularity, plus the fiber will help you feel full longer so you might eat less, and could even lose weight.
- For many people who want to get more fiber in their diets, they
take one of the powdered formulas you can find in the drug store.
Unfortunately, most of these powders simply do not have the same high concentration of high quality fiber that is found in flax, or the heart healthy essential fatty acids or lignans.
Flaxseed
DEFINITIONS
Flax (also known as common flax or linseed) (binomial name: Linum usitatissimum) is a member of the genus Linum in the family Linaceae. It is native to the region extending from the eastern Mediterranean to India and was probably first domesticated in the Fertile Crescent. This is called as Jawas/Javas or Alashi in Marathi.[1] Flax was extensively cultivated in ancient Egypt. New Zealand flax is not related to flax, but was named after it as both plants are used to produce fibers.
Flax is an erect annual plant growing to 1.2 m tall, with slender stems. The leaves are glaucous green, slender lanceolate, 20–40 mm long and 3 mm broad. The flowers are pure pale blue, 15–25 mm diameter, with five petals; they can also be bright red. The fruit is a round, dry capsule 5–9 mm diameter, containing several glossy brown seeds shaped like an apple pip, 4–7 mm long.

Cranberry Juice
DEFINITION
Cranberry juice is the juice of the cranberry. Commercially, it is sold in either as a pure juice which is quite tart, or, more commonly, as cranberry juice cocktail, mixed with water and sugar or an artificial sweetener (such as aspartame or sucralose), or in blends with other juices, such as apple or grape. These may also be blended with other juices or flavors.
Cranberry juice cocktail is sometimes used as a mixer with alcoholic drinks such as a Cape Cod (1+1/2 ounces of vodka to 4 ounces cranberry juice) or non-alcoholic drinks such as the Bog Grog (2 parts Chelmsford Ginger Ale [or regular ginger ale] to 3 parts cranberry juice).
BENEFITS
- Cranberry juice contains phytochemicals, which can
help prevent cancer and cardiovascular disease
- Cranberry juice may help prevent and relieve the symptoms of urinary tract infections by reducing E. coli bacteria found in the urinary tract. This works by altering the molecular structure of the fimbriae on the virulent strains of the bacteria that cause the infections.[2] Cranberry juice has no effect on strains of E. coli that do not contain fimbriae.
- Cranberry juice is also a natural diuretic and can be used to relieve bloating during a menstrual cycle
- Cranberry juice may also help prevent kidney stones
- According to Nutritionist Ann Louise Gittleman, Ph.D., C.N.S., Cranberry juice contains high levels of organic acids, which have an emulsifying effect upon fat deposits. She generally suggests it along with some flax seed or flax seed oil.
- Study results in 2002 suggest that cranberry juice may inhibit a type of bacteria that is a common cause of ear and
- respiratory infections in children. This is according to researchers at the annual meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
- In this study it was found that cranberry juice can inhibit certain strains of Haemophilus influenzae, a type of bacteria found in the nose and throat of 75% of healthy children and adults. The bacteria can also cause infections, and may be responsible for up to 40% of bacterially-derived middle ear infections.
- For women, cranberries can help to boost free radicals and improve the skin health. This can help to reduce cellulite and aid the recovery of that dimply skin.
- Experts have recommend that one should drink at least one glass to three glass of cranberries juice per day will provided the required health benefits. Clinical studies had shown that three glasses per day has helped the trial participants to lower their risk of heart attacks by up to 30 to 35%.
Virgin Olive Oil
DEFINITION
Virgin Olive Oil is a fruit oil obtained from the olive (Olea europaea; family Oleaceae), a traditional tree crop of the Mediterranean Basin. The wild olive tree originated in Asia Minor and spread from there as far as southern Africa, Australia, Japan and China.[1] It is commonly used in cooking, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and soaps and as a fuel for traditional oil lamps. Olive oil is used throughout the world, but especially in the Mediterranean. Virgin olive oil is made from the first pressing of olives and contains higher levels of a class of antioxidants known as polyphenols than more refined olive oils that come from later pressings.
BENEFITS
- Studies have shown that people who consumed 25 milliliters (mL) - about 2 tablespoons - of virgin olive oil daily for 1 week showed less oxidation of LDL cholesterol and higher levels of antioxidant compounds, particularly phenols, in the blood.
- Olive oil is clearly one of the good oils, one of the healing fats. Most people do quite well with it since it does not upset the critical omega 6 to omega 3 ratio and most of the fatty acids in olive oil are actually an omega-9 oil which is monounsaturated.
- Spanish researchers suggest that including olive oil in your diet may also offer benefits in terms of colon cancer prevention. Their study results showed that rats fed diet supplemented with olive oil had a lower risk of colon cancer than those fed safflower oil-supplemented diets. In fact, the rats that received olive oil had colon cancer rates almost as low as those fed fish oil, which several studies have already linked to a reduction in colon cancer risk.
- According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), consuming about 2 tablespoons (23 grams) of olive oil a day may reduce your risk of heart disease.
- All types of olive oil contain monounsaturated fat, but "extra-virgin" or "virgin" olive oils are the least processed forms, so they're the most heart healthy. Those types contain the highest levels of polyphenols, a powerful antioxidant that also can promote heart health.
- Virgin olive oil also produced another healthy antioxidant effect. It increased the level of substances in the body that prevent the oxidation of bad, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Oxidation of this type of cholesterol is linked to the formation of clots in blood vessels, which could lead to heart attack or stroke
